U.K. Approves E-Cigarette Prescriptions To Help People Quit Smoking

LONDON (Reuters) – Britain’s drug regulators have given the go-ahead for a British American Tobacco electronic-cigarette vaping device to be sold as a quit smoking medicine, the first such product to be given a drug license in the UK.

The decision to license BAT’s e-Voke product means it can now be prescribed on the state-funded National Health Service for patients trying to give up smoking.

“We want to ensure licensed nicotine containing products — including e-cigarettes — which make medicinal claims are available and meet appropriate standards of safety, quality and efficacy to help reduce the harms from smoking,” the Medicines and Healthcare Products Regulatory Agency (MHRA) said in a statement on Monday.

The statement said the e-Voke license was granted “recently”, and a spokesman told Reuters it was issued “towards the end of last year”.

Many experts think e-cigarettes, which heat nicotine-laced liquid into an inhalable vapor, are a lower-risk alternative to smoking, but since they are relatively new products, there is little long-term evidence on their safety.

Public Health England, the government’s public health agency, has said it considers e-cigarettes to be at least 95 percent safer than tobacco cigarettes, which cause lung cancer and many other diseases and kill half of all those who use them.

BAT said in a statement on its website it is “currently evaluating plans to commercialise” e-Voke, which uses cartridges containing pharmaceutical grade nicotine.

More than 2 million adults use e-cigarettes in Britain, about a third of whom are ex-smokers and two-thirds current smokers, according to the charity Action on Smoking and Health.

Big tobacco firms, including BAT, Philip Morris International, Japan Tobacco and Imperial Tobacco Group, are jostling for position in the emerging vaping market, which is estimated at around $7 billion for 2015.

The MHRA said it would “continue to encourage companies to voluntarily submit medicines license applications for e-cigarettes and other nicotine containing products as medicines” and hoped to see more e-cigarettes and next generation nicotine delivery products submit applications in future.

E-cigarette vapor has cancer-causing chemical formaldehyde

Last Updated Jan 22, 2015 8:46 AM EST

E-cigarette vapor can contain cancer-causing formaldehyde at levels up to 15 times higher than regular cigarettes, a new study finds.

Researchers found that e-cigarettes operated at high voltages produce vapor with large amounts of formaldehyde-containing chemical compounds.

This could pose a risk to users who increase the voltage on their e-cigarette to increase the delivery of vaporized nicotine, said study co-author James Pankow, a professor of chemistry and civil and environmental engineering at Portland State University in Oregon.

“We’ve found there is a hidden form of formaldehyde in e-cigarette vapor that has not typically been measured. It’s a chemical that contains formaldehyde in it, and that formaldehyde can be released after inhalation,” Pankow said. “People shouldn’t assume these e-cigarettes are completely safe.”

The findings appear in a letter published Jan. 22 in the New England Journal of Medicine.

Health experts have long known that formaldehyde and other toxic chemicals are present in cigarette smoke. Initially, e-cigarettes were hoped to be without such dangers because they lack fire to cause combustion and release toxic chemicals, a Portland State news release said.

But newer versions of e-cigarettes can operate at very high temperatures, and that heat dramatically amps up the creation of formaldehyde-containing compounds, the study found.

“The new adjustable ‘tank system’ e-cigarettes allow users to really turn up the heat and deliver high amounts of vapor, or e-cigarette smoke,” lead researcher David Peyton, a Portland State chemistry professor, said in the news release. Users open up the devices, put their own fluid in and adjust the operating temperature as they like, allowing them to greatly alter the vapor generated by the e-cigarette.

When used at low voltage, e-cigarettes did not create any formaldehyde-releasing agents, the researchers found.

However, high-voltage use released enough formaldehyde-containing compounds to increase a person’s lifetime risk of cancer five to 15 times higher than the risk caused by long-term smoking, the study said.

Formaldehyde is a known human carcinogen, according to the U.S. National Cancer Institute. It is a colorless, strong-smelling gas, commonly used in glues for products such as particle board, and in mortuaries as an embalming fluid.

The American Vaping Association, an industry group advocating for e-cigarette makers, argued that the new study was flawed because e-cigarette users wouldn’t operate their devices at such high voltage.

“When the vapor device was used at the realistic setting of 3.7 volts, levels of formaldehyde were similar to the trace levels that are released from an FDA-approved [smoking-cessation] inhaler,” association President Gregory Conley said. “However, when the researchers increased the voltage to 5 volts and continued to have their machine take three- to four-second puffs, this caused extreme overheating and the production of formaldehyde.”

This is known “in vapor product science as the ‘dry puff phenomenon,’ ” Conley said. “Contrary to the authors’ mistaken belief, these are not settings that real-life vapers actually use, as dry puffs are harsh and unpleasant. In the real world, vapers avoid dry puffs by lowering the length of their puff as they increase voltage.”

Noting that e-cigarettes remain unregulated, a representative with the American Cancer Society said these findings highlight the need for the U.S. Food and Drug Administration oversight.

“This study shows how little we know about toxic exposures that can result from using any one of the many different available types of e-cigarettes at different heating levels,” said Eric Jacobs, the cancer society’s strategic director of pharmacoepidemiology.

In April 2014, the FDA proposed federal restrictions that would bring e-cigarettes under the same regulation as tobacco. The proposed federal restrictions are still under review and no schedule has been set for adoption.

“Until these things are monitored and regulated, there’s a real potential risk for unexpected exposure to toxic chemicals,” Jacobs said. “We really don’t know what kind of exposure the users might get when using any particular product at any particular heating level.”

E-Cigarette TV Ads Target Kids, Study Finds

By Hope T. Jackson, MD

Cigarette ads may have been banned from television since 1971, but that hasn’t stopped electronic cigarette makers from placing TV ads likely to be seen by children and young adults.

Researchers at Research Triangle Institute International found that between 2011 and 2013, e-cigarette TV advertisements that reached children increased by 256 percent, and those that reached young adults increased by 321 percent.

“TV is the primary way advertisers target youth, and these results aren’t surprising given that e-cigarette brands have been purchased by tobacco companies, who’ve had major advertising budget increases,” said study author Dr. Jennifer Duke. “It is very surprising that youth and young adult exposure is rising so rapidly.”

5 Things You Need To Know About E-Cigs

E-Cigarette Explodes in Man’s Mouth

Duke and her team found that 80 percent of the ads were for the same company, Blu eCigs, and that the ads were airing on networks such as Comedy Central and VH1.

E-cigarettes, battery-operated nicotine inhalers, have been met with controversy as researchers scramble to determine their health risks. The Food and Drug Administration announced earlier this year that it would begin regulating e-cigarettes.

“There are regulations currently in place to prevent youth-oriented flavorings in traditional cigarettes, but this regulation does not extend to e-cigarettes,” said Dr. Brian Primack, a pediatrics professor at the University of Pittsburgh who was not involved in the study. “As a result, marketers see the potential value of targeting this product to them.”

E-cigarettes are available in flavors like bubble gum and apple, and they come in a different colors.

The percentage of middle and high school students using e-cigarettes more than doubled between 2011 and 2012, according the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. It’s survey found that in one year, students using e-cigarettes went from 4.7 percent to 10 percent.

“Youth exposure to nicotine can cause changes in the developing brain that favor continued use of nicotine at later stages in life,” Duke said.

The Smoke Free Alternatives Trade Association, an e-cigarette industry organization, told ABC News its members do not support or engage in advertising to minors. However, the group said too many restrictions on e-cigarette advertising may be “counterproductive” because “ads are an important source of information and education about the rapidly changing technology behind vapor products.”

Blu Cigs sets limitations on advertising placement to be sure it’s reaching audiences that are made up of at least 85 percent adults “in an effort to minimize any potential exposure to minors,” according to a company statement sent to ABC News.

Doctor’s Take

TV commercials expose us to hundreds of messages a day. This study provides evidence that advertisers target children at alarming rates, hoping not just for sales, but for brand loyalty in the future.

What may be even more alarming is that this study only looked at television advertising. Add in social media ads, radio and print, and kids and young adults are likely seeing e-cigarette ads frequently.

Research on the health risks of e-cigarettes continues, but nicotine in both traditional and e-cigarettes is highly addictive and has serious side effects.

Product Reviews :: The Story Behind The Air Jordan 5 Sneakers

The Air Jordan 5 sneakers were released in 1990. The shoes featured an innovative style, creative designs, and some new features that previous Jordan sneakers lacked. However, aside from the technical aspects behind the sneakers, there is another story that makes these particular shoes a lot more interesting than many people even know about.

1990 was a great year for the infamous basketball star Michael Jordan. In 1990, a new coach, Phil Jackson was put in charge of the Chicago Bulls. Jackson who replaced Doug Collins as head coach was able to lead his team to victory during his first term serving as head coach of the team.

In the year 1990, the Bulls held the best record that they had ever held. The star of the team, Michael Jordan hit his personal best scores during the year as well. During a game against Cleveland, the star was able to score 69 points in one game. During the year, the star also landed ninety two three point shots during the season, compared to the sixty eight three pointers he had in all of the seasons that he played combined.

1990 was a great year for the star, and an even better year for him to introduce his brand new sneakers to the general public as well. Given the All-Star reward that year, the rising basketball star was definitely on his way to bigger and better things.

The actual design of the shoes was inspired by a World War 2 Mustang fighter plane. One of the main focal points of all of the shoes from the time was the appearance of shark teeth shapes that was placed into the insoles of all of the shoes that were released on the line that same year.

These shoes were also the first pairs of Jordan sneakers that featured a translucent or clear bottom sole. Not only was the clear bottom sole implemented to create an aesthetic affect, but it also served a purpose for the adorner. The clear sole created better traction, which is essential to anyone that dabbles in the game of basketball.

The sneakers also possessed a reflective tongue and lace locks, something that previous shoes did not possess. Even though the shoes did not have any problems selling on their own, the fact that they possessed rubber soles that did not contain any color added to their allure.

Over time the clear soles were designed to turn yellow and then switch their color over to an amber shade. If you happened to purchase these shoes when they were first released onto the market, chances are that your shoes are probably beginning to show a small amber tint along their clear bottom sole.

The Air Jordan 5 sneakers were not only a big hit because of their design, but they were also a big hit because of the success that the basketball phenomenon had when he was wearing them. Everyone wanted to be like Mike, so everyone ran out to purchase the exact sneakers that he was wearing when he was leading the Bulls to victory.

Electronic Cigarettes – New Revolution for the Smokers

Have you been trying to quit your habit of smoking but losing the battle again and again? We all know the harmful effects of smoking a cigarette. But it is very difficult to quit the habit all at once as addictions have a way of settling in too deep. But you can try out electronic cigarettes for a change. It is a healthier option while it takes care of your smoking needs.

The electronic cigarette is an advanced version of the traditional tobacco options like the cigarettes, cigars and pipes. The electronic cigarette or e-cig is an electronic device which is operated by a battery. This kind of cigarette offers inhaled dose of nicotine or non-nicotine solution. Besides, inhaling this solution also provides a physical flavor and sensation which is comparable to the conventional tobacco. The electronic cigarette device works as a vaporizer and it vaporizes the flavor (also known as e-liquid) to replicate actual smoking.

Puffing electronic cigarette is great because when smoking the smoker inhales a flavored smoke and exhales an odorless smoke which is not harmful. So, this type of smoking doesnt cause any harm to the health of the smoker.

Flavors of electronic cigarette-

The electronic cigarettes also come in flavors like original tobacco, cool menthol and red M. You can add some extra fun by smoking these flavored electronic cigarettes. If you want a cool and refreshing feeling in your mouth and throat, then you can try the menthol flavor.

Electronic cigarette accessories-

The e-cigarettes have some general accessories. These are:

A battery – the e-cigarette battery is the most important part of a cigarette kit. The battery helps to heat the e-liquid. The battery life depends on the type and size, usage frequency and the operating environment of the battery.Atomizer- The electronic cigarette is made with copper, stainless steel and ceramic. The atomizer comes along with refill cartridges which ensure that the smoker gets more vapors with each inhalation.Charger- the wall charger and USB charger are the other accessories that come with an electronic cigarette kit. The wall chargers are perfect to charge the e-cigarette batteries efficiently and very quickly. The USB ports are also used to charge the electronic cigarettes.

But one thing you should remember that the electronic cigarettes do not help anyone to quit the smoking habit completely. It is only a substitute of smoking cigarettes.

Next front for battle of quitting smoking is vaping

The newest front in the battle to get people to quit smoking is now electronic cigarettes or otherwise known as vaporizers. Yes, according to Fort Wane Business Weekly which was reported on July 18, vaping is the newest trend among those wanting to quit smoking cigarettes.

According to the report, retailers who are selling electronic cigarettes are rocking the vaping scene. And if you want to start vaping, you dont have to stick to just e-cigarettes because they also have pipes, hookahs, and electronic cigars to deliver the nicotine to vapers. Also, according to Reason, most adults prefer the juvenile flavors of e-cigarettes, pipes, hookahs, and e-cigars.

Although everyone is getting in on this latest trend, is it really safer than regular cigarettes and cigars? We have to question this newest trend because apparently, these new e-cigarettes have not even been approved by the FDA yet. The FDA is taking comments on vaping until August 8 but there might still be a two year wait before vaping is approved by them.

This isnt stopping people from vaping or even selling the vaporizers and electronic cigarettes though. Many people use vaping to help them stop smoking real cigarettes and it seems to be working for them. One man stated that he hasnt smoked a real cigarette in 10 months and doesnt want to anymore.

Many people also like to blow smoke rings with their e-cigs and some people say they really like the flavors of them. Although vaping is used to help people stop smoking regular cigarettes, it doesnt stop their nicotine addiction since electronic cigarettes, cigars, and other pipes and hookahs do have nicotine in them.

Have you tried vaping yet? Do you think using e-cigarettes can help a person quit smoking? Do you like the flavor of the pipes and hookahs? Sound off with your opinions in the comment section below and let everyone know what you think about this new trend among smokers.
